The Rock, a World Outreach Center
Dr. Berin here, missionary at large from the Rock to many nations around the world. Many years ago there was a small Bible study group in Minneapolis that gathered weekly, as time progressed, they began taking an offering for world missions. With the funds they raised, they began supporting work among the “garbage kids” in the Philippines. These kids literally live on the edges of a garbage dump in Manila, and their daily food comes from the trucks that deliver garbage each day to the site. The missionary working in that area was providing food, clothing, shelter, and education for these children.
After some years of supporting this work, the group got curious about where their support was going and decided to raise money for a mission’s trip to visit these kids in the Philippines. After months of fundraising, they finally had enough money to buy their air tickets, but then had a crisis of conscience. The money raised for their airfares was much more than they had been sending to the missionary in Manila. They called the missionary up and told him that instead of them visiting, they were going to send over a large amount of money they raised for their airfares.
The missionary immediately protested. “Please spend the money on the airfares,” he pleaded. “Come and see what we are doing here to reach these kids.” Reluctantly, the group bought their tickets and flew to the Philippines. What they saw changed their lives forever. Their hearts broke to see the poverty of these children and the monumental effort that missionary was making to reach those precious young lives. As they watched little kids combing through the piles of garbage for a morsel of bread, they became gripped with a passion and a vision to make a difference in their lives.
That small Bible study group returned to Minneapolis with a zeal and purpose they never experienced before. The leader of the group ended up writing a book titled, “The Million Dollar Living Room.” That small group, in the course of just a few years, raised over a million dollars for the “garbage kids of Manila.”
This is what happens when we allow the needs of the nations of this earth to touch our hearts: We get to see how easy it is for us to make a difference, to reach those less fortunate, and to demonstrate the love of Jesus to a lost and broken world! This is one of the main reasons we are bringing the nations of the world to the doorstep of the Rock Church on February 20-22nd. Our church is hosting the ISOM International Conference, where delegates and leaders from close to 100 countries will be sharing. You can visit isomconference.org to see the full details of the conference.
